Light jets are the workhorse of private aviation. Compact but capable, they carry five to seven passengers on trips of roughly 1,500 to 2,000 nautical miles — enough to cover almost any intra-European city pair or US East Coast hop without a fuel stop. For most private travellers, this is where charter delivers its clearest value: shorter runway performance opens up smaller regional airports much closer to your final destination, cutting an hour or more off the door-to-door journey compared with an airline routing through a major hub.
A modern light jet cabin seats up to seven in a club-four plus two-seat divan layout, typically with a refreshment centre, in-flight entertainment, and — on most current-generation aircraft such as the Phenom 300 or Citation CJ4 — an enclosed lavatory. Cruise speeds of 400–450 knots put London within reach of Nice, Geneva or Ibiza in well under two hours, and Farnborough or Biggin Hill to the Alps in a single short sector. Baggage volume is more limited than midsize aircraft, which is worth planning for on ski or golf trips with bulky equipment.
Because operating costs are relatively low, indicative hourly rates begin at around USD 3,500 — making a London → Geneva sector achievable from roughly USD 12,000 all-in, including handling, fuel, crew and landing fees. For longer sectors, a super-midsize or heavy jet is usually a better fit; for anything up to three hours with a small party, a light jet is almost always the most efficient choice.
